Journal History

The Undergraduate Research Journal (URJe) started in 2005, the year after the first EURECA conference. The first volume was a collection of the papers presented in the conference. The first 3 volumes - 2005, 2006, and 2007 - were edited by Amani Elshimi and Deanna Blevins, two Rhetoric and Composition instructors, leading the effort to support and make prominent research at the undergraduate level. Because of the absence of support staff, publication in URJe was halted for a few years. In 2016, Amani Elshimi, then Director of Undergraduate Research, formed a partnership with the AUC library, with Mark Muehlhaeusler becoming co-manager of URJe. Together, the co-managers acquired an ISSN number for the Journal and developed a platform on Open Journals System (OJS). The system allowed for application, review and publication on the open access platform. The 2016, 2017 and 2018 volumes were published using the system. A board of reviewers was recruited, expanding from an initial 7-person committee in 2017 to a 21-person committee in 2019. In the Fall of 2019, Meredith Brand, instructor in Rhetoric and Composition, was recruited as the new co-manager of URJe, now working under Susanne Rizzo, the new Director of Undergraduate Research.
